Why we shelve books by feeling, not by genre

Walk into the back room and you’ll find a shelf labelled “for a rainy Sunday”. It started as a joke. It is now our best-selling corner, and here is what it taught us about how people actually choose books.

  1. Reading list · 24 September

Seven slim novels for a long weekend

All under 200 pages, all impossible to put down.

  2. Interview · 15 September

Hana Sato on maps, memory and her father’s desk

Ahead of her reading here on 17 October.

  3. Essay · 3 September

The case for rereading in autumn

A familiar book is a different book every time you return.

Our story

Margaret and Sam Holloway opened The Floret in 2014 in what used to be a flower shop on Linden Street. The name stayed, and so did the wide front window.

We are a small team of six readers. We don’t stock everything, on purpose. Every title is chosen by someone who has read it and would happily press it into your hands. If we don’t have what you’re looking for, we’ll order it in, usually within three days.

Most of all, we wanted a shop where nobody minds if you stay for an hour and leave with nothing. Most people leave with something anyway.

— Margaret, Sam & the team
